About the TEAM for West Virginia Children

On this site is an overview of our main programs. The TEAM, its programs and its partners seek to build strong families and safe communities thereby preventing child abuse. Child abuse and neglect prevention is not just the right thing to do, it's the best thing to do for the long-term prosperity of our country.

2011 Service to Children Award to honor Janet Bromely

The TEAM for West Virginia Children is making plans for its annual Service to Children Dinner to be held on May 17, 20100 at 6:00 P.M. at Guyan Golf & Country Club. This year’s Service to Children Dinner will honor Janet Bromley. Through her long-standing commitment to local organizations such as the Huntington Symphony Orchestra, the Huntington Museum of Art, and the Woman’s Club of Huntington, Mrs. Bromley has had a positive impact on the lives of countless West Virginia children. This year’s Service to Children Dinner will serve to celebrate such impact.

Individual tickets to this year’s Service to Children Dinner are now available at a cost of $100 per ticket. The success of this event is credited largely to our donors and sponsors, who lend their names and financial support to the event. The money we raise each year at this event goes to further the central focus of the TEAM, which is to keep children safe and free from abuse and neglect by connecting parents with community support and by building community resources to create positive environments for children.

Our Babies: Safe and Sound, a new statewide campaign was unveiled on Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at the Charleston Area Medical Center's Women & Children's Hospital.

The new campaign, funded by the West Virginia Children's Trust Fund in collaboration with the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, focuses on two infant safety issues: Infant Safe Sleep and Preventing Shaken Baby Syndrome.

The safe sleep campaign provides tips on how to put a baby to bed safely; for example, infants who sleep in an adult bed or on other furniture are forty times more likely to die from accidental suffocation. The campaign aimed at preventing Shaken Baby Syndrome will provide information on how to cope with long periods of crying; inconsolable crying is the primary trigger for adults who resort to shaking an infant.

Ruth C. Sullivan, Ph.D.

The TEAM for West Virginia Children presented its 4th annual Service to Children Award to Ruth C. Sullivan, Ph.D. on May 11, 2010. This award is to recognize Ruth's outstanding dedication to educating and supporting children and families with autism in West Virginia.

"Ruth Sullivan is a pioneer in the field of autism. Her dedication to children and adults with autism has created the policies and infrastructure to sustain lifelong changes in West Virginia and beyond," said Laurie McKeown, executive director of TEAM for West Virginia Children. "This is the same philosophy TEAM for West Virginia Children practices. By creating policies and infrastructure to prevent child abuse and neglect, the TEAM has been working to create safe and healthy communities for West Virginia children for over two decades."
